"Happy Sitting at the Kid's Table?

I'm not.

I'm not happy at all sitting at the kid's table. But that's where I am.

And if you are a Linux user, you are too. Bet you didn't know that didja?

Neither did I. Until two weeks ago.

That's how long it's taken me to decide whether I'm going to even talk
about this in public. I decided that it's probably something you knew
in your gut anyway.

Yeah many of you did.

I made a good friend at Google three years ago. We became friends
when I was offered an interview for a job there. Fact is...I would have
been this new friend's replacement. He would have trained me in, if I
was hired on.

In that I turned the offer down due to the commitment I now have
really wasn't a surprise to many. Friend was able to find work with
Google in another city where his wife was being transferred so it all
worked out in the end.

And I gained an extremely good friend. He'll be reading this as soon
as it's published. I am sure he suspected it would be a topic for
discussion.

Two weeks ago, Friend was in Texas and He drove down to see me. We
knocked back a few beers on some small patio bar in Round Rock. When
the subject turned to work, I knew Friend was in a position to answer a
question for me. It's probably something you knew in your gut anyway.

Yeah you did.

I asked him the question:

"Why does Google refuse to reference that Android or Chromebooks are
Linux-based?"

He took a pull on his Shiner Bock and did something I didn't really
expect.

He answered me. And I'm not going to use quotes because I didn't
write it down but this is awful close:

Because Linux Users can't be trusted to behave if they are taken out
into public.

He went on to explain that the powers that be (of which he is not one
but within that circle) simply don't want anything getting in the way of
Google's march to their phone, tablet and computer market supremacy.
Their Chromebook slayed the numbers this Christmas season and many
within the marketing effort at Google believe NOT associating their
brand with Linux may have helped tremendously.

Is Linux mentioned anywhere in the Android Marketing?

No.

Is Linux mentioned anywhere in Chromebook Marketing?

No.

From our public infighting, to our fragmentation in distro and desktop
wars, to our inability to even give decent application names to our
programs.....

We act like a bunch of children fighting over the drumstick at
Thanksgiving.

In other words.

Let the grownups take care of business, and be quiet....don't make us
stop this car.

And no, don't rage at me. I wrestled with this for a couple of weeks,
knowing it would piss some people off, but more importantly.....

It would validate what many of you already knew.

Many of the grownups just don't want to be seen in public with us.

Maybe not you, and I certainly hope not me, but still...

It is felt that Linux as a brand name is tainted, and for far more
reasons than I mentioned above, but those are pretty much the heavy hitters.

If it makes you feel better to yell at me in the comments, go ahead.
I've pretty much accepted that it would happen anyway.

And by doing so....you fairly well prove Google's point. See?
Sometimes, the grownups are right.

All-Righty Then"

Too effin' funny!

Exactly what we've been telling you cola "advocates" for years: the
Linux "community" is a pack of petulant, ill-mannered children not
welcome in normal IT society.

Want some examples of their ridiculous childish behavior? Sure thing:

==============================================================================

The "community" of Linux freeloaders reacting when they find out they
won't be provided current versions of stuff they had been freeloading:

"Burn in hell
Fuckers
Idiots... you're clueless
i will never use your product again.
Fucking losers
Good riddance
traitors
songbird sucks"

From the comments:
http://blog.songbirdnest.com/2010/04/02/songbird-singing-a-new-tune/

==============================================================================

Linux children reacting to problems with a Foxconn mobo:

"I spit on foxconn"

"I further believe that Microsoft is giving Foxconn incentives to
cripple their motherboards if you try to boot to a non-Windows OS."

"I am going to start harassing the phone operator at foxcomm "

"I say we boycott Foxconn!"

"If (MCTH (_OS, "l1nux"))
{
Then (8Uy v1574, 5creW joOr5elF)
}"

"New users, likely booting up Ubuntu will see how "unstable" it is, just
assume that Linux is crap, and run back to Windows over this problem
that Microsoft and Foxconn have in fact, concocted."

An adult at the Ubuntu forum had to step in and close the thread to keep
the Linux children in diapers from eating and slinging too much of their
own doo-doo. Then another adult had to step in and change the thread
title since the Linux children are liars.

I take it you have never heard the fouled mouthed embarrassing public
outbursts of Linus Torvalds or of Richard Matthew Stallman? ;)

Torvalds using foul mouthed language in addressing major
corporations does the cause of free software no favors.

Incidentally have you noticed that Ubuntu always now present
themselves always at Ubuntu and never as Ubuntu Linux, not
even mentioning the word Linux on their home page?

The Fedora Project do acknowledge on their front page that
Fedora is Linux based, as do openSuse, and with Linux Mint,

Yes, I so want to identify myself with the greedy pretentious
hypocrites who speak so saintly, yet would gut their grandmothers fer
a nickel.

I'll stick with the "foul mouthed" but honest RMS and Linus, rather
than the back stabbing lying despots that are screwbuntu and google.
They'd all be eating dirt if it weren't for linux. Google is more
than happy to make gajillions of $$$ off linux, but acknowledge it?
God (or is it Jobs?) forbid!! None of them will get one thin dime

I have few problems with Torvalds. Stallman on the other hand is a repulsive
nutcase.

Stallman:
-----
I am skeptical of the claim that voluntarily pedophilia harms
children. The arguments that it causes harm seem to be based
on cases which aren't voluntary, which are then stretched by
parents who are horrified by the idea that their little baby
is maturing.
-----
If people are seriously concerned not to let children have
sex in making porn films, they could use the approach that
has succesfully eliminated cruelty to animals in films. You
have seen the statements certifying that "no animals were
harmed in making this film." There could be a similar
certification that "no minors had sex or were nude with
adults in making this film."
-----
The way to protect children from being used to make porn is
to punish those who are involved in the distribution business
together with those who make porn using real children.
-----
When making pornography involves real abuse of real children,
those who distribute it under a business relationship with
the abusers arguably participate in the abuse. They could be
prosecuted for doing so. However, that does not excuse
censorship. No matter how disgusting published works might
be, censorship is more disgusting.
-----
Internet filtering in schools blocks access to educational
materials. While that article focuses on blockage of the
educational materials that prudes would admit, porn is also
very important for education. Blocking adolescents¹ access to
porn, or keeping them ignorant of sex in any way, is likely
to stunt their emotional growth and make them vulnerable to
mistakes that can hurt them badly.
-----

Why would any corporation want to have *any* association with a man who says
such things?

I write simulations for the ABA ( "The Bankers" ).
The ABA who are lobbying Congress

(o) against stricter bank examination standards

(o) against the adoption of Basel III,
a global regulatory standard on bank capital adequacy

(o) revoke the tax exempt status of Credit Unions

(o) against a new regulatory regime to oversee cyber-security

(o) revoke the tax exempt status of the Farm Credit System

(o) against expanding the lending authority of the Farm Credity System

(o) relax rules on credit swaps and other risk instruments

(o) repeal limits on debit card transaction fees

Basically they are in favor of returning to the environment
which allowed the financial collapse of 2008 because of the
lax banking rules.

I was explaining to Dr. Unruh why I subject myself to
Windows 8 "tyrany", instead of Linux "democracy" ( his words ).

My primary phone, Bria⋅3 for Windows, has no "Desktop Linux" version.
It works on Androids and iPhones, but not on Linux Distros; see:
http://www.counterpath.com/bria.html

Even if I WANTED to give up all my favorite devices and apps
for the "democracy" of Linux Distros ( and I don't ),
I still couldn't force my clients ( bankers ) to give them up.

I wasn't bosting, I was just making a point:

Strange that they offer Bria 3 for Linux ("Desktop") if there is no such
version.

I have to say I don't care much about a handful computers, mainly
desktop machines what people run on them, as the majority of computer
systems runs Linux.

As the Linux world is democratic, it don't forbid people from using
other operating systems, not even closed ones.

If you would have wanted to switch over to Linux, there had been methods
for you run those applications even without dual booting. As you aren't
interested, we don't have to go into details.

As you have posted to alt.os.linux.gentoo, you should have been writing
something related to Gentoo Linux, it had been acceptable to write about
Gentoo Windows too and as a die hard ms-windows fan boy, I do recommend
you to take a look at that project, as it would lead to that ms-windows
would be come more secure when third part applications will be updated
as microsoft do not give the service you get as a Linux user where third
party applications are included in updates.

Over 4 days ago, Dr. Unruh implied that Windows⋅8 ( my example )
was a product of "tyrany" while Ubuntu ( again, my example )
is more "democratic". [ ref: 9MPTs.56238$***@newsfe16.iad ]

The idea being: << Sure, Microsoft's trains run on time,
but I wouldn't want to live there. >>

The Linux kernel is run by king Linus, a total tyrant. My hero.

Ubuntu is the most popular Linux distribution on desktop/laptop
personal computers only because it's ruled by an "evil" overlord,
Mark Richard Shuttleworth. Mark is also a hero too many, including me.

So I explained to Dr. Unruh why, exactly,
I chose Windows⋅8 over Ubuntu.
[ ref: Jeff-***@Feb.16{2.26.PM.Seattle.2013} ]

My lists of reasons was universally derided as
the ravings of a lunatic too stuck on himself.
How dare I assume anyone cares about my personal opinions.

I wrote ( and you, Mr. "nospam", dismissed ):

I've been coding DOS boxen since 1983, Windows since 1989.

For me, and many like me, Windows has been THE standard
for a VERY long time. Ubuntu is relative newcomer.

Also, you dismissed this comment of mine:

Today, I code for Windows 8; I wrote my own "start button"
and I never see the "start screen" ( a.k.a. "Metro" ).

Windows⋅8 isn't static, immutable, changeless and choiceless.
I can and do change it. It's easier to change than Windows⋅7.

Again:

I have lots of devices attached to my diskless/fanless, 20 Watt PC;
e.g. Logitech g110 keyboad, g35 headset, g600 mouse.

Over 4 days ago, Dr. Unruh implied that Windowsâ??8 ( my example )
was a product of "tyrany" while Ubuntu ( again, my example )
The idea being: Sure, Microsoft's trains run on time,
but I wouldn't want to live there. ï?žï?ž
Unruh why, exactly,
I chose Windowsâ??8 over Ubuntu.
My lists of reasons was universally derided as
the ravings of a lunatic too stuck on himself.
How dare I assume anyone cares about my personal opinions.
I've been coding DOS boxen since 1983, Windows since 1989.
For me, and many like me, Windows has been THE standard
for a VERY long time. Ubuntu is relative newcomer.
Today, I code for Windows 8; I wrote my own "start button"
and I never see the "start screen" ( a.k.a. "Metro" ).
Windowsâ??8 isn't static, immutable, changeless and choiceless.
I can and do change it. It's easier to change than Windowsâ??7.
I have lots of devices attached to my diskless/fanless, 20 Watt PC;
e.g. Logitech g110 keyboad, g35 headset, g600 mouse.

Point made. I will leave it to the reader to figure out what the point
was and who made it.

I am done.

"Happy Sitting at the Kid's Table?
Anti-Linux trolls set the agenda?

Don't think so troll!!

Google, Microshat, Appil all afraid of the true
power of Linux tablets awakening:

http://www.thevarguy.com/2013/02/15/are-linux-tablets-still-on-the-way/

Fractobot Says:

February 16th, 2013 at 8:04 am

I bought the Pengpod 7″ Linux version through Indiegogo
that boots Linaro Linux (which is an ARM derivative
of Ubuntu) from internal flash.
It has been so far stunning journey.
There is nothing in the tablet
world to compare it with.

1. I’ve run it for hours compiling Gambas3
and its barely warm. The reason I find out is that
it clocks down when idle and ramps up speed when CPU
is busy. No wasting of power here then. Since
the entire OS and BIOS like functions are under the
control of Linux, everything about power management
is 100% beautiful.

2. So I get Gambas3 to compile by downloading
everything flawlessly through WiFi.
(A bit complicated – follow the instructions
at gambas web site. If it reports missing libraries,
then install those. If it reports problems with GLUT,
then remove lib-mesa2 and compile again.)
When it compiles you got now a tool more powerful
than Visual Basic because you got your normal visual IDE,
a fast execution environment, and it connect into the thousands
of open source programs to control it, feed data into them,
or take data from them for analysis.

3. Then I connected my Startech USB ethernet interface.
It just ran – no fuss – no mess.
So now I got WiFi and I got physical internet.

4. I installed Apache after but
didn’t realise how well it runs.
I loaded big html files with lots of big
images and lots of data. It seems it was quicker
to load from the Pengpod through local LAN than it was
to load it from a web server hosting company
with 70Mbit download link.
Pengpods are fast enough to be ARM microservers
on their own. I had ‘top’ running in a bash
terminal when I accessed
the apache. It hardly blinked!!

5. Unlike any competing tablets out there, the productivity
of Pengpod Desktop Linux tablets is just out of this world.
Particularly of if used with a real desktop PC and ssh.
Being able to use ssh and ssh -X to run applications on
your local desktop whilst actually running the application
on the tablet adds the third dimension to flat top
tablet computing!! :-)
Something with no one can compete with.
Its a big mistake whoever talked themselves into
ignoring 1GHz Linux on ARM tablet, and ssh / ssh -X.
Now I got myself a full ssh server + headless server + tablet
that is also a web server!!

6. I can use a proper pdf reader and read datasheets
manuals with same ease as desktops now!!

7. I got proper desktop firefox browser and not these crippled
dopey mobile browsers and I can do everything as on
real desktop – such as for example logging into
remote security cameras to view and control it.

8. The spreadsheets and wordprocessors are real as
real is on the desktop. With ssh -X, the work can
continue when you get home on your real desktop.
This a lot better than of fumbling around with grubby fingers
on a 7″ tablet screen when you don’t have to.

9. The UI has been improved over previous desktop Linux
implementation.
Pressing the volume control brings up a scalable the touch
screen keyboard nicely.
Being resizable it is an immense help.
Touching and then holding and then dragging scroll bars work
intuitively. Again a big step up.

10. I tried barcode reader and it worked.
So now I can walk with this tablet, run a desktop Linux
stock taking program and use the barcode reader properly
as if I was carrying a desktop around with me.

11. Many other USB gadgets also seems to work and if you have
trouble with some device driver, just message the guys
and are ready to add some more drivers to the kernel.
A thing to watch out for is attempting to drive
too many devices through a small USB link. One or more
devices can drop out. But that happens with all products
of this type.

12. With gambas3 compiled and running and ssh working,
I set up a connection share with nautilus so I can
drag and drop files from desktop to Pengpod.
I can develop GUI applications on the desktop and drop
the compiled programs into tablet with drag and drop.
Click and run on the tablet and it works VERY FAST
for a developer environment to create GUI applications.
I made a simple application with big buttons like you would
see in a Kiosk computer and it just worked. I installed
espeak, and sure enough, when I press the buttons, I can
actually make the tablet talk back!!!

In all, no one ever had this kind of computing power
for $110 in such a small compact form factor.
If that isn’t stunning experience with a tablet,
then I don’t know what is! :-)

Is Linux mentioned anywhere in the Android Marketing?
No.
Is Linux mentioned anywhere in Chromebook Marketing?
No.
I love Linux dearly and have since its birth.
But I cannot really flaw their logic. I do not think that adding Linux to
marketing would help.

I am abit of an irritant in the forums of my favorite games Dominions 3 and
Conquest of Elysium 3 because I jump down the throat if people get it
wrong. They are not windows/mac games that work on linux, they are linux
games that were then ported to windows/mac (developed on Ubuntu). But does
harping on that help anything? not really. It just scares or confuses the
winnies and mackies.

Dont beat me up. Like I said I love Linux.
But I would say that Linux is still an item for the tech-specs area. Most
people do not care, would be confused, or even made nervouse about
mentioning it. Those people who consider it important will know anyway so
there is no need to put it in big letters with bright colors. It is not
quite yet a sales point. So as far as the marketing guys figuring on it, I
cant really disagree.

I didnt say it was correct. But why put a name to something if it is so
prevalent? Linuxphobes would denote an unreasonable and crippling fear of
something.

I love linux but everything has its pros and cons. I am not so fanatic as
to think it is the perfect answer (yet). In fact, if it had become the
perfect answer, I probably would not enjoy it as much as I do and I would
have to move on to the next "almost but with potential".

Indeed that was the case and I did not wish to imply otherwise.

Diseases need names ;+)

Usually when somebody is accused of being some type of "phobe"
or other, they do not exhibit "crippling fear" though.

Maybe it is time to put an embargo on the non-medical use
of the term "phobe"?

True, and the problem with Linux is that one cannot become
part of a Botnet yet.

There is no perfect answer and there never will be.

All OSes are imperfect because they are made by imperfect people.

Time to try BSD? ;+) ;+)

Been there done that.
I use unix, linux, windows, and mac.
I would recommend each for certain uses, and not for others.
