Help!
I have burned a Gentoo live DVD, and can boot off it, but am unable to use it
to install the OS to a hard drive. I am using a Jetway mini ITX motherboard and
two 6 GB microdrives (IDE). I have had no problems with installing Fedora and
Ubunto from CDs, but want to give Gentoo a try. I am using a USB external DVD
drive.

You would need to do something like:

dd if=image.iso of=/dev/sdb

keep in mind that this will destroy any information you may have on that hard
drive (in this example the secondary hard drive).

If you want to make a proper installation, then follow the instructions in the
installation handbook:
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-amd64.xml

If you don't want to spend time compiling, then I suggest you use Sabayon
Linux, which is a binary based distribution based on Gentoo:

If you need such an application, you have no bussiness running gentoo.

No, it isn't. It's not exactly "up to date" anymore in a few sections, but in
terms of vebosity, the Gentoo documentation is better than what you get with
most other distributions, short of the Linux From Scratch books maybe.
Post by Klaus Hellnick
There is no step by step instruction for installation.
But of course there is. The fact that you are making this claim suggests that
you haven't even read the handbook.
Post by Klaus Hellnick
The live DVD can't even mount the HDs by itself.
It's not supposed to. If that's what you're looking for, then Gentoo is not
the right distribution for you, because Gentoo leaves most of the decisions up
to the user. The Live DVD will find all your devices, but where you mount them
is your responsibility.
Post by Klaus Hellnick
Whoever made the live DVD and CD was apparently too stupid to make any
sort of installation app, unlike Fedora, SuSE and Ubuntu.
No, there *has* been an installer, called Anaconda and based upon the
RedHat/CentOS/Fedora installer, but its use was optional and it precluded a
number of installation options that were available to those who opted for the
manual install (which was the default).

As I gather, the installer has in the meantime been removed because of bugs.
Post by Klaus Hellnick
There is no excuse for having to be an IT professional in order to
install from a live DVD.
The Gentoo Live DVD is not intended as an automated installer. It is intended
as a fairly "complete" Live DVD for people who do not have a working network
connection and would still like to install Gentoo, and to provide for a
workable system when it is used *as* a Live DVD.

If you want something that has an installer, then Gentoo is not the
distribution for you, and then you should perhaps, as J.O. Aho suggested, use
Sabayon instead.

Gentoo is not without flaws, neither as a distribution nor as an organization.
But the things *you* are attacking Gentoo on are bogus, and the way you are
conducting yourself right now is very reminiscent of Usenet trolls. I would
suggest an attitude adjustment.

On Sunday 08 August 2010 07:58 in alt.os.linux.gentoo, somebody
identifying as Klaus Hellnick wrote...
Gentoo is not without flaws, neither as a distribution nor as an
organization. But the things *you* are attacking Gentoo on are bogus,
and the way you are conducting yourself right now is very reminiscent
of Usenet trolls. I would suggest an attitude adjustment.
OK, I will check out sabayon, which I never heard of before. Also, Gentoo did
NOT detect the hard drives. Unfortunately, I also had the same problem with the
Fedora installation DVD (bootable but not live)which was unable to detect the
the USB DVD drive, halting the installation. This was very strange, since the
Fedora live CD had no problem detecting and mounting all drives. I am not a
troll, just very frustrated and upset at all the time and effort I put into
trying to get Gentoo to work on this ITX system. I DID read the installation
instructions in the handbook, and it never even mentioned the DVD. Once again,
thank you for the replies. I have used Red Hat and SuSE in the past, as well as
Unix on an HP mini computer. I have also done 6502 assembly coding on the Apple
2 and tried for years to make OS2 usable, despite apparent sabotage by factions
in IBM. I am not a total novice, though am rusty on Linux. Well, anyway,
goodbye. I will probably lurk a bit, but don't think I will be posting.

I have burned a Gentoo live DVD, and can boot off it, but am unable to
use it to install the OS to a hard drive. I am using a Jetway mini ITX
motherboard and two 6 GB microdrives (IDE). I have had no problems with
installing Fedora and Ubunto from CDs, but want to give Gentoo a try.
I am using a USB external DVD drive.
dd if=image.iso of=/dev/sdb
keep in mind that this will destroy any information you may have on that hard
drive (in this example the secondary hard drive).
If you want to make a proper installation, then follow the
instructions in the
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-amd64.xml
If you don't want to spend time compiling, then I suggest you use Sabayon
http://sabayon.it/mirrors
TY for the reply, but I looked at the handbook and it is crap. There is
no step by step instruction for installation.
The whole manual is a step by step instruction with examples which you can
actually copy paste and they will work, all you need to do is read and do as
instructed, of course blend in those options you want to use and your hardware
supports.

The live DVD can't even mount the HDs by itself.
It includes the mount command, what else do you need? And it do support more
file systems than any other "live dvd".
Post by Klaus Hellnick
Whoever made the live DVD and CD was apparently too stupid to make any
sort of installation app, unlike Fedora, SuSE and Ubuntu.
The later ones are for people who has been handicapped by microsoft, they need
to relearn how to use a computer before they can take a step up on the ladder.
